Organic gardening at Tõlluste farm

Organic farming and agriculture do not affect environment but contribute to the natural diversity, health and preservation. European Union strictly regulates organic farms, production facilities and products, and these regulations have recently become even stricter. The overall goal is to guarantee supply of the truly environmentally clean products to the consumers.

According to the provisions of Clause 29 (1) and EU Directives 834/2007 and 889/2008, the land where Tõlluste farm is located, is subject to the European organic farming standards. Only the producers certified by approved certification bodies and included in the register of organic agricultural products producers are allowed to mark their products as “organic”. All European certifying companies have the certificate of ISO 65 (EN 45011) guaranteeing independence, competence and impartiality.
Special commission has checked whether the land meets the legal requirements and ruled that the land of the farm actually complies with the requirements of the law.
It means that the plants gathered at the land are really organic and no pesticides were used for growing.

Please refer to "Our plants" section for the list of the certified plants.
COSMOS Organic Certificate

As from July 2016, all extracts produced at Tõlluste farm are certified by the COSMOS Organic standard issued by the German association BDIH.

The COSMOS-Standard was set up to unite all the schemes of european certifications  into the one more general, strict and common standard of organic and natural cosmetics in Europe.  Besides the basic principles, in COSMOS strandard it is also important how the product will  decay in the nature and what intermediate stages at his receiving have been used. The consumer can see a sign COSMOS ORGANIC or COSMOS NATURAL in a combination with a sign of the participant of association who has certified a product on the package.
The extracts produced on a farm are certified by the COSMOS Natural/Organic (IONC) standard issued by the German association BDIH (IONC).

BDIH (Bundesverband der Industrie- und Handelsunternehmen, Federal Association of Industrial and Commercial Companies) (IONC) is the Association responsible for organic certification and its requirements are among the strictest in the world.
BDIH (IONC) was founded in 1952 with the headquarter in Manheim (Germany) and the Association unites more than 500 cosmetic producers. In 1996, the Association together with the leading producers of eco-cosmetics developed a set of regulations for natural cosmetics certification.

In addition to cosmetics, BDIH (IONC) certificates:
  • food supplements
  • cosmetics and cosmetic products
  • medications
  • diet products
  • medical equipment.
Every year, the independent institution analyses and checks more than two thousand products of the above list.

Requirements to the certified cosmetics with the COSMOS Organic standard are confirmed by strict following to the following rules:
  • Not less than 95% of ingredients have to be natural.
  • It is possible to use only 5% of synthetic components among the ingredients list allowed by this standard.
  • Not less than 95% of botanical ingredients have to be organic.
  • Not less than 20% of ingredients have to be organic for indelible products, and not less than 10% - for washed away products.
  • Indispensable condition is the percentage indication of the organic components from the total mass of the product on the package.

BDIH also recommends following the additional criteria:
  • full list of ingredients on the label
  • no ingredients from genetically modified plants
  • meet the environmental norms applicable to the raw materials, production and labelling processes
  • social responsibility to local workers, prioritized use of raw materials from developing countries.

If all the conditions are met, the product receives the COSMOS Natural/Organic Certificate (BDIH) (IONC).  BDIH (IONC) also regularly inspects the production facilities to confirm the actual fulfilment of all the requirements which regulates not only the composition but also the production process of the cosmetics. Thus, BDIH (IONC) confirms strict application of the strict standards of organic purity and quality of ingredients, environmentally friendly production technologies, environmental consciousness, and social responsibility of business.
